FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Glass Straws

Are glass straws safe?

Yes — glass straws are one of the safest options available. Simply Straws are made from borosilicate glass, which is the same material used in laboratory glassware and high-end cookware. It's non-toxic, BPA-free, and doesn't leach chemicals — even in hot drinks. Unlike plastic straws, glass won't shed microplastics into your beverage. Our founder is a dental professional, and product safety is the filter every decision gets run through.

What is borosilicate glass?

Borosilicate glass is a type of glass that contains boron trioxide, which makes it significantly more resistant to thermal shock and physical stress than regular soda-lime glass. It's used in scientific lab equipment, high-end cookware like Pyrex, and — in our case — glass straws. It's harder, more durable, and safer than standard glass. All Simply Straws glass straws are made from borosilicate glass.

Can glass straws break?

Glass straws can break if dropped on a hard surface or bent with force, just like any glass object. However, our Classic and Wide straws are built with a 2mm wall — the thickest in the category — which makes them significantly more resistant to breaking than competitors' 1mm–1.5mm wall straws. That's not marketing: it's the reason we can offer a Lifetime Guarantee. Under normal everyday use — drinking, washing, carrying — our straws are built to last. If one ever does break under normal use, we replace it at no charge.

Are glass straws dishwasher safe?

Yes. All Simply Straws glass straws are dishwasher safe. We recommend placing them in the utensil basket or a mesh bag to keep them from rattling around. You can also clean them by hand using our Simply Clean straw brush, which is designed to fit all of our straw sizes.

Do glass straws work in hot drinks?

Yes. Borosilicate glass handles temperature extremes well — it won't crack from thermal shock the way regular glass might. Our straws work in hot coffee, tea, and other warm beverages. One honest note: glass does conduct some temperature, so it may feel warm on your lips with very hot drinks. Many customers actually appreciate this as a signal to sip slowly.

Finding the Right Straw

What size glass straw do I need?

It depends on what you're drinking and what you're drinking from. Here's a quick guide:

  • 7mm Cocktail Straw (6") — For short glasses, lowballs, rocks glasses, wine glasses, and champagne flutes. Also doubles as a stirrer.
  • 9mm Classic Straw (6", 8", or 10") — The everyday straw. Fits standard drinking glasses, highballs, water bottles, and mason jars. Great for water, soda, iced tea, and juice.
  • 10mm Tumbler Straw (12") — Designed specifically for Stanley®, YETI®, and Owala® tumblers. Includes our exclusive ClinkGuard™ silicone boot.
  • 12mm Wide Straw (8" or 10") — Built for thick drinks like smoothies, protein shakes, and acai bowls.

Do glass straws work in Stanley cups?

Yes — but you need the right straw. Our 10mm Tumbler Straw (12") is specifically engineered for Stanley® 30oz and 40oz Quenchers, YETI® tumblers, and Owala® bottles. Every Tumbler Straw set includes our exclusive ClinkGuard™ silicone boot, which protects the glass from chipping or cracking inside the stainless steel tumbler and eliminates the clink noise. It's the only glass straw built specifically for this purpose. Standard glass straws (including ours) don't fit Stanley lids properly and aren't recommended for tumbler use.

What is ClinkGuard™?

ClinkGuard™ is our exclusive silicone boot that fits over the base of our Tumbler Straws. It serves two purposes: it protects the glass straw from chipping or cracking when it contacts the inside of a stainless steel tumbler, and it eliminates the clink noise you get when glass meets metal. ClinkGuard™ is unique to Simply Straws — no other glass straw brand offers it. It's included with every Tumbler Straw set at no extra cost.

Our Lifetime Guarantee

How does the Lifetime Guarantee work?

Simple: if your Simply Straws glass straw ever breaks under normal use, we replace it — no receipts required, no runaround. Just contact us at simplystraws.com/pages/contact-us and let us know what happened. We'll take care of it. The guarantee covers breakage under normal drinking, cleaning, and carrying use. It does not cover straws that are deliberately broken, lost, or given away. There is no time limit — the guarantee is for life.

What counts as "normal use"?

Normal use means everyday drinking, hand or dishwasher washing, and transporting in a bag or case. If your straw breaks while you're using it as intended, it's covered. Dropping it from a height onto concrete, running it over with a car, or any other extreme situation would fall outside normal use — but honestly, we've never had anyone try to claim that.

Sustainability & Brand

What is a Certified B Corp?

B Corp certification is awarded by the nonprofit B Lab to companies that meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. It's one of the most credible third-party verifications a company can earn — it covers how a business treats its workers, community, customers, and the environment. Simply Straws is a Certified B Corp, independently verified.

What does "1% for the Planet" mean?

1% for the Planet is a global network of businesses that commit to donating 1% of annual sales to environmental nonprofits. Simply Straws is a proud member — which means 1% of every sale you make goes directly to organizations doing hard environmental work. It's not optional and it's not a rounding error — it's a real, verified commitment.

Is Simply Straws a Women-Owned business?

Yes. Simply Straws is owned and led by a woman. We're proud to carry the Women-Owned certification and to be part of a growing community of businesses built by and for people who want to do things differently.
