Regular vs. Wide Mouth Mason Jar Straw Lids: Which One Fits Your Jar?

Two mouths, two lids. Here is how to tell which one your jar needs in about ten seconds.

The ten-second test

Mason jars come in two standard sizes, and the lid has to match the jar. A regular mouth jar is roughly 2¾ inches (70 mm) across the opening. A wide mouth jar is roughly 3⅓ inches (86 mm). Lids and bands are made for one size or the other, so they do not swap.

Not sure which one you have? Hold a ruler across the top of the jar. Closer to 2¾ inches means regular mouth. Closer to 3⅓ inches means wide mouth. Ball and Kerr make both sizes in pint and quart, so measure instead of guessing from the volume.

• Maple cold brew. Cold brew, a small spoon of maple syrup, a splash of cream.
• Pumpkin smoothie. Pumpkin puree, banana, milk and cinnamon, blended and poured into a wide mouth jar.

Pouring something hot? Check that your jar is made for hot liquids first. Not all jars are.

Caring for your lid

Take out the silicone ring inside the rim, wash it separately so no food particles are left behind, and dry it right away. Leave the grommet in place.
