Silver City the second city in NM to ban plastic bags

SILVER CITY >> After an emotional Silver City Town Council meeting Tuesday night during which many people spoke on behalf of the ban and one town councilor broke down in tears, councilors voted unanimously to pass a ban on plastic bags.

“I’m pleased that there was so much support for the reduction,” Town Councilor Cynthia Ann Bettison said after the meeting. Bettison sponsored the ordinance.

Bettison stressed in her comments after the meeting that the ordinance does not ban all plastic bags. It allows retailers to still use plastic bags with a thickness of 2.25 mils or one-one thousandths of an inch. Once the ordinance goes into effect Jan 1, 2015, plastic bags that have a thickness of less than 2.25 mils will be banned. The plastic bags banned are also known as single-use plastic bags.

Town Manager Alex Brown likened the bags to “being like a little kite,” that flies off. Brown spoke during the meeting about the town having to contract with an agency to get additional help in cleaning up plastic bags that fly out of the landfill.
