MARTINEZ, Calif. – City Council approved the purchase of 2,000 reusable plastic bags as initial outreach and education of a proposed ban on single-use plastic bags in Martinez.
The council directed staff at the Nov. 6, 2013, council meeting to draft an ordinance banning single-use plastic bags. Since that time, staff has met twice with representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Martinez to formulate a plan for outreach and education.
Following those meetings, it was determined the City would purchase a significant number of high-quality, 100 percent recycled-content reusable plastic bags for distribution to the public at no charge. Providing these reusable bags free to the public is expected to help promote awareness of the plastic bag ban and encourage the use of reusable plastic bags as an effective alternative to single-use plastic bags or paper bags.
