When it’s cold outside and everyone else is cuddling up to a hot cup of coffee or chocolate, I wonder how someone that eats a totally raw diet gets the same kind of comfort that a hot drink brings. Instead of a drink warm from using hot milk or water to prepare it, Kelly Fleming has created a totally raw chai smoothie that provides that same warming on a cold day with some delicious spices. Fleming chose to use cinnamon, cardamom and ginger to stimulate the body to feel the same kind of heat as a warm drink when the drink itself is frozen. I find that so amazing.
According to the book, The Fat Resistance Diet, cinnamon enhances foods nicely with a hint of sweetness, and has been studied for its health effect. Cinnamon may affect the body by reducing blood sugar and preventing diabetes. Cinnamon and cardamom were studied and found to prevent cancer in animals as well as provide some detoxification of the liver. Ginger has some naturally occurring anti-inflammatory substances and because of that, ginger teas have been used to treat migraine headaches, digestive problems, and arthritis.
In this Warming Chai Smoothie recipe, the chai spices are mixed with frozen bananas, coconut oil, nut milk and coconut nectar to make this creamy and delicious smoothie, which tastes very warm.
