A Day of Service: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 14, 2021 1 min read

Monday, Jan 18th, marks what would have been the 92nd birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

Volunteering within your community is a great way to be a part of the change you want to see. Simply Straws normally volunteers at beach cleanups locally in Orange County CA. This Monday we are looking beyond plastic waste.

Many in-person celebrations have been cancelled or will be held virtually, but you can still find ways to honor the contribution of Dr. King through action and reflection. Here are three ways to celebrate and serve:

1. Join AmeriCorps in their Annual Day of Service. Find events in your community and commit to serve beyond a Monday. Pledge to dedicate time and energy to your community throughout 2021.

We love their idea of making the holiday "a day ON, not a day off".

2. Visit theKingCenter.org to learn how the memory of King lives on through their programs and find one that speaks to you. Learn about this year's theme "The Urgency in Creating the Beloved Community".

3. Watch one of several movies or documentaries devoted to the life and work of Dr. King. Check out this list from Alexis Soloski in the NYTimes including "Selma" and "King in the Wilderness".

Once you have honored Dr King or served locally, join us for 40% off everything. It's our way to say thank you for being a part of OUR community.
